When Bombaim moved in, the brief was unusual: change as little as possible.
Six thousand square feet across three floors. Art Deco grilles. Louvered windows that hold the light rather than block it. And at its centre, a triple-height atrium that opens straight to the sky — so the weather, the hour, the season are all part of the room.
Nothing was flattened into retail. The staircase is still the staircase. The proportions are the family's, not a planogram's.
That decision shapes everything. You do not move through the store the way you move through a shop; you move through it the way you move through a home — up a floor for the couture rooms, into a corner for a designer you did not come looking for, back to the atrium to see a piece in real daylight.
Past and present sit in the same rooms. Minimal beside maximal. Indian wear beside western pret. The house holds the contradiction comfortably, because houses always have.
In 2024, Architectural Digest named it an AD100 space. Condé Nast Traveller called it a hive of activity, a Bengali family's heritage home turned boutique. The press noticed what regulars already knew: the building is not a backdrop for the clothes. It is part of the reason they feel the way they do on you.
